Xinfan Market

Xinfan Market is a reconstruction project located in the old town of Huzhen, Jinyun County, Zhejiang Province. The old market, which had been in operation for over 20 years, was demolished due to safety hazards in its structure and sanitation. Based on a detailed record and study of the old market, the design does not aim to beautify mundane daily life but instead focuses on highlighting the inherent tension that already existed. The metaphorical alignment between the roof and the stalls echoes Peter Sloterdijk’s notion of “spheres as the ultimate Technological Titanism.” The limitations imposed by economic considerations became leverage for the market’s evolution into a new type of village infrastructure.
